My dog does not eat - what can I do?

Ein Hund liegt neben einem Napf und frisst nicht.

You know the familiar ritual: feeding time for your faithful four-legged friend. But suddenly he sniffs at the bowl and turns away - your dog doesn't eat. In such moments, concern for his health often rises. We explain possible causes and how you can react appropriately.

Reasons and solutions for appetite loss in dogs

If your dog suddenly refuses to eat, there are a variety of possible reasons. It's important that you identify the cause so you can respond and help your dog eat with joy again.

  • Gastrointestinal problems:Offer easy-to-digest food, reduce portions, and split meals to ease stomach upset. If problems persist, consult a veterinarian.
  • Dental problems: Check your dog's teeth for any injuries or tartar. If you give your dog dry food, soak it beforehand to make it easier for him to chew, or reach for wet food instead. A veterinarian can treat dental problems.
  • Infections or diseases:Consult a vet immediately to get a diagnosis and start the appropriate medical treatment.
  • Stress: Provide a calm and safe environment for your dog. Rituals and regular activities can help relieve stress. Relaxation exercises or tranquilizers may also be helpful in consultation with a veterinarian.
  • Grief or separation anxiety: Give your dog time to adjust to change. Offer him plenty of attention, distraction and love to see him through difficult times.
  • Puberty: When your dog hits puberty, his hormone levels change. This can lead to a loss of appetite in some dogs. Others are simply testing their limits and want to find out what happens when they refuse their food. Keep up your feeding routine and observe what's going on with your dog.

Remember that each dog's individual needs are different. If you are concerned about your dog's lack of appetite, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate solutions.

Long-term prevention of loss of appetite in dogs

To prevent your dog from not eating its food and thus ensure the long-term health and well-being of your dog, proactive prevention is key.

  • Regular veterinary check-ups can identify and treat potential health problems at an early stage.
  • Stress reduction plays an important role: Provide your dog with a calm environment, establish fixed rituals and be there for him when he needs support.
  • Exercise is not only good for your dog's physical health, but also for their psyche. Make sure they get enough walks and playtime.
  • Mental stimulation keep him active and motivated through training, toys and brain teasers.

By paying attention to these aspects, you can actively help to build a happy, healthy relationship with your dog and reduce the likelihood of your dog not eating.
