Everything you need to know about cat food

Veterinarian Gesa Neudecker recommends:

Good cat food is based on the natural needs of your velvet paw. It depends on the best ingredients, an optimal composition and important nutrients.

  • Good cat food contains at least 60% meat - a perfect source of protein.
  • Cats can hardly utilize carbohydrates. In cat food, a small amount is enough to support digestion.
  • Attractants, sugar or additives do not go into the bowl for cats, please.

When is cat food species-appropriate?

If you feed your cat species-appropriate, you take into account its natural prey. Wild cats eat mainly small mammals, such as mice, rabbits, hares and birds. Now and then also insects. Only very rarely are plant components, such as fruits, on their menu. Domestic cats should therefore also be fed a diet with a meat content of at least 60%. This way they get proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are difficult for cats to digest.

What makes good cat food?

A good cat food consists mostly of meat and offal, such as heart, liver, lungs or spleen. Fish also suits the taste of the house tigers. If the individual components can be clearly identified in the cat food, this is a sign of good quality. Sugar and additives such as preservatives, colorants, attractants and flavor enhancers are unnecessary in a good cat food.

How do I determine the right amount of food for my cat?

The perfect amount of food for your cat depends on its individual energy requirements. This in turn depends on the age, size, weight and activity of the animal. Make it easy on yourself and look at the feeding recommendations on the packaging! If you are still unsure, ask the veterinarian.
