The right food for your dog is the best basis for health and vitality. But how and where do you store dog food properly? And how can you tell if the food is still good?t? With our tips, your four-legged friend's food is guaranteed to stay fresh, tasty and nutritious for a long time. Yummie!

In what do you store dry food?

Depending on the type of food, different storage solutions are available. You usually buy dry food for your dog in large bags. Unfortunately, the packaging can contain plasticisers and other chemical substances. It is therefore better to decant dry food if the food bags do not have a protective metal layer inside. Special food bins or buckets are available for storage. Put small quantities in a storage tin. Important: The container should be airtight and impermeable to light. If you keep dry food open, it can become soft and lose flavour. Place the food container in a dark, cool and dry place. This way, pests don't stand a chance and the dry food will taste good to your pet for a long time.

How long should dry food be stored?

A good guide to the shelf life of dry food is the best-before date. You can note it on the separate container when you throw away the empty bag. Dry food for dogs usually has a shelf life of at least 18 months.

How is wet food stored?

The wet food for your pet does not need to be decanted. If you don't use a tin of dog food straight away, simply put it in the fridge. Then feed it as quickly as possible. How do you prevent unpleasant odours and keep the food aromatic? Practical can lids help here, which you can use to seal the open can airtight. Alternatively, you can also fill wet dog food in a glass jar with a lid or in a plastic box. Important: Never feed dog food straight from the fridge! Wait some time until the food has reached room temperature. This will prevent your dog's belly aching.

How do you recognise fresh dog food?

Fresh dog food is characterised by a natural colour and a pleasant smell. However, if dry or wet food has a rancid odour or is mouldy, it should no longer be fed to the dog and should be disposed of. Opened wet food can be stored in the refrigerator at 4-7 °C for 2-3 days. Check the appearance and odour of the food to determine if it is spoiled.
