How to find the right dog food

Dogs are primarily carnivores by nature. Good dog food should therefore contain at least 50% high-quality meat. Other components of a good dog food are vegetables, minerals and oils. These provide important nutrients and energy.

Good dog food is also characterized by the fact that it does not contain any additives such as flavor enhancers or preservatives.

There are many discussions among dog owners about whether wet or dry food is better. And wet BARF is also very highly recommended by many. There is no generalised answer to which type of dog food is best, as it depends entirely on the dog. Each type of food has its advantages:

Advantages of wet food:

• It contains a lot of water and is therefore particularly suitable for dogs that drink little. 
• It is easier to chew for dogs with dental problems. 
• It has a strong odour and taste and is therefore very popular with many dogs.

Advantages of dry food:

• It contains less water and therefore more calories, so the dog needs less food quantity than with wet food. 
• It is easy to store, transport and portion.

Advantages of Wet BARF:

• You decide on the ingredients yourself and therefore know exactly what your dog is given. 
• It is free from artificial additives.
• It enables a very varied and customised diet for your dog. 

Adult dogs should be fed twice a day. Puppies, pregnant dogs and dogs with sensitive stomachs can also be fed three times a day. It is important that you divide the total amount of food between the different meals.

It is best to introduce fixed feeding times for your dog. These don't have to be exact times, but can also be periods of time. Make sure that there is always at least an hour between feeding and walking to give your dog time to digest.
